The Department of Surgery incorporates a dedicated Laparoscopic Surgery Unit for the treatment of the most common surgical intra-abdominal conditions.

Indicative procedures include:
- Laparoscopic cholecystectomy - Laparoscopic appendectomy - Diagnostic/exploratory laparoscopy - Laparoscopic hernia repair with mesh (patch repair) - Laparoscopic excision of intra-abdominal cysts and tumours

  • Minimal surgical trauma with negligible intraoperative blood loss
  • Early hospital discharge and rapid recovery (typical inpatient stay of 24 hours, with return to daily activities within 2–3 days)

    Enhanced visualisation of the majority of intra-abdominal organs

Today, laparoscopic surgery has largely replaced conventional open procedures and has established itself as the method of choice for the management of most surgical conditions, including inguinal and umbilical hernia repair, appendectomy, and benign and malignant diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.
