Transesophageal Echocardiography (TOE)

An advanced high-resolution examination performed via the esophagus using a specialized endoscopic probe. Ideal for detailed imaging of the valves, atrial septum, and aorta, as well as for the detection of thrombi. An essential examination prior to cardiac surgical procedures.

Indications:
  • Detection of thrombi in the left atrium prior to cardioversion for atrial fibrillation
  • Detailed evaluation of valvular disease (particularly mitral valve)
  • Investigation of endocarditis
  • Assessment of patent foramen ovale (PFO)
  • Pre-operative evaluation for surgical management of valvular disease
  • Screening for aortic dissection
Advantages:
  • Exceptional resolution of posterior cardiac structures
  • Superior image quality compared to transthoracic echocardiography
  • Detection of small thrombi and lesions
  • Critical for pre-operative surgical planning
Examination Procedure:

Following local anesthesia of the pharynx, a specialized endoscopic probe is introduced through the mouth into the esophagus. The patient must fast for 6 hours prior to the examination. The procedure lasts 15–20 minutes.
